H.R. Tabor family letters : San Francisco, to Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Sleight in Sag Harbor, Long Island, 1850-1857.

In seven letters to her uncle and aunt in Sag Harbor, H.R. Tabor writes of family, including cousin John Hempstead, returning home over land vs. sea, and fires in San Francisco, Sacramento, and Marysville. She tells of attending a wedding where the bride wore her travelling dress since her trunk had fallen into the water off the steamer, and writes of family daguerreotypes, walking in San Francisco at night, going to lectures, church activities, and Chinese friends and their dress, languages, and religious life. She also writes about her home, the layout of the rooms, furniture, daily routine, her husband A. Jackson Tabor's illness and attending to his business for him ("I am quite a lawyer"). Letters to the Sleights from John Hempstead mention mining arrangements on the Mokelumne River, hauling dirt to water, sending gold home, and a ranch in Snelling, Merced Co. Other letters, including one from A.J. Tabor, relate to administration of Hempstead's estate after his death. Letters from J.W. Talbott and Hempstead's partner John Ivett in Snelling to H.R. Tabor about the estate also included.
